Bladder leak products for women: pads, liners and underwear

Bladder leak products for women: pads, liners and underwear

For women managing bladder leaks, the right product comes down to two things: how much you leak and when. Liners and thin pads suit light leaks, longer pads suit moderate ones, and pull-on or overnight underwear suits heavier leaks and long nights. This guide goes from lightest to heaviest, then covers fit, discretion and when to ask a professional.

Start with how much and when

Spend a few days noticing three things. A note on your phone is enough, and nobody else needs to see it.

  • How much: a few drops, enough to dampen your underwear, or a larger release.
  • When: while walking or exercising, when you cannot reach a washroom quickly, or mostly at night.
  • How long: do you need protection all day, or only for part of it, such as a workout or a long drive?

Those answers tell you which section below to read first. Many women end up with two products: a slim one for the day and something longer or more absorbent for night.

Liners and thin pads for light leaks

For a few drops, a liner or thin pad is the lightest option. It sticks inside your own underwear with an adhesive strip, sits flat under fitted clothing and is easy to carry in a bag. Close-fitting underwear holds it in place better than a loose pair.

Look for the words bladder leaks or incontinence in the title, because a period liner is a different product made for a different job. A liner is made for light leaks, so a larger release can soak through. Check the absorbency level on the product page before you buy a big pack.

Longer pads for moderate leaks

When a liner is no longer enough, move to a longer pad. Pads come in lengths, and the length is often in the title. Always Discreet Incontinence Pads for Women, Moderate, Regular Length, 108 Count is one option at moderate absorbency, and Poise Pads for Women, Maximum Absorbency, Long, 84 Count is a pad labelled long at maximum absorbency.

Length matters because a longer pad covers more of the front and back when you sit, bend or lie down. If the damp shows at the edge of a pad and not in the middle, try a longer length before you move up an absorbency level.

Pull-on underwear for heavier leaks

Pull-on protective underwear is worn like regular underwear, with the absorbent layer built into the garment instead of stuck inside it. It covers more area than a pad and moves with you, which suits heavier leaks and long active days. Always Discreet Maximum Underwear for Women, Small/Medium, 84 Count is one example, and Depend Silhouette Underwear for Women, Large, 52 Count is another. Sizes follow a measurement range on the product page, so measure before you order.

Some women prefer washable underwear, which is laundered and worn again instead of thrown away. Styles in the Washable Incontinence Underwear collection differ in how much they are made to hold, so check each page, and plan for enough pairs to cover the days between laundry loads.

Night-time options

Lying down changes where liquid goes, and you may not be able to change for hours, so night products are made longer and to hold more. You have two routes: an overnight pad, such as Poise Overnight Incontinence Pads for Women, Extra-Coverage, 36 Count, or overnight underwear, such as TENA Overnight Incontinence Underwear for Women, Large, 11 Count.

Change into a fresh one as the last thing before you lie down, and check the pack for which way round a pad goes. Some women add a washable bed pad on the bed as a backup for the mattress.

Fit and discretion under clothing

  • Thickness: liners and slim pads sit flattest. Try a product under the outfit you plan to wear before an important day.
  • Legs: a snug leg fit helps keep leaks from escaping at the edge. A gap at the leg often means the size is off or the product has shifted.
  • Shade: some women's products come in soft colours, and titles name them, such as Blush or Pink.
  • Freshness: keep a few wipes with your supplies. Adult wipes, including fragrance-free and unscented ones, are in the Adult Wipes & Skin Care collection. Check the title or description to see whether a wipe is scented.

You can compare pads and underwear side by side in the Incontinence Products collection.

When to check with a doctor or pharmacist

Products manage leaks. They do not explain them. Check with a doctor, nurse or pharmacist if leaks are new, have become heavier or more frequent, or came on suddenly. The same goes for leaks that come with pain, burning or blood in the urine, or that began after childbirth. If your skin turns red, sore or itchy and does not settle, ask about that too. There is nothing to be embarrassed about in raising it.

Common questions

Will a pad or underwear show under leggings?

It depends on the product. Liners and slim pads sit flattest, and a close fit at the legs and waist helps avoid bunching. Try it with the outfit at home first.

Should I start with a pad or with underwear?

Start with the lightest product that keeps damp from reaching your clothes, using the notes you took. If a pad soaks through, or you are changing it more often than you would like, step up to a longer pad or to underwear.

Do pads come in sizes like underwear?

Pads are chosen by length and absorbency. Underwear is chosen by size, so measure and use the chart on the product page.

Can I use one product for day and night?

Some women do. A night product is built for hours lying down, so a day product can fall short overnight.
