How do I choose a wound dressing?

Dressings come in a few main types. Foam dressings, such as Mepilex and Biatain, soak up fluid. Film dressings, such as Leukomed T, are thin and transparent. Hydrocolloid dressings, such as DuoDERM, form a soft gel as they work. Gauze and fixation sheets cover or hold dressings in place.

The best one to reorder is usually the exact version and size your nurse chose. Compare Mepilex and Allevyn or DuoDERM and Comfeel Plus.

What size and box count should I order?

The size on the box covers the whole dressing, border included. Boxes are sold in different counts, such as 5, 10 or 50, so check the count before you compare prices.

Some dressings have no adhesive border. These need tape, a fixation sheet such as Hypafix, or a bandage to hold them in place. Opened healthcare items cannot be returned, so confirm the version and size on your last box before you order.

What helps protect the skin around a wound?

Wound care often includes more than the dressing. This collection also lists wound cleansers, adhesive remover sprays, skin barrier products and gentle tapes from brands such as Smith & Nephew, Molnlycke, Coloplast and 3M.

Use each product as its label directs, and ask your nurse, doctor or pharmacist about your care plan. For dry or fragile skin elsewhere on the body, see our adult barrier creams and skin ointments.

Questions shoppers ask

Can I swap one brand of foam dressing for another?

Foam dressings from different makers do the same basic job, but they differ in layers, shape and wear time. Ask your nurse before switching, and reorder the same version and size where you can.

What does the size on the box mean?

For bordered dressings, the size covers the whole dressing including the border, not only the pad. Check the listing for both numbers when they are shown, and compare them with your wound care nurse's instructions.

Do dressings without a border need tape?

Many do. A non-bordered foam pad needs tape, a fixation sheet or a retention bandage to hold it in place. Check the listing and follow the maker's instructions.

Can I return a box of dressings I have opened?

No. Opened healthcare items cannot be returned, so check the dressing type, size and box count before you order. If you are unsure, call us at 365-797-2167.
