How do I pick the right baby diaper size?

Baby diapers are sized by weight, not age, and each brand prints its own weight ranges. Weigh your baby and match the number to the pack. Ranges overlap, so a baby can sit between two sizes. Diapers or training pants?

Tab-style diapers are laid flat and fastened, which suits a child who is not using the toilet yet. Training pants pull on and off like underwear for a child who is learning. There is no set age to switch. Watch for cues such as standing for changes and interest in the potty, then try a few pairs. What else should I compare?

  • Day or night. Overnight and nighttime products are sold separately. Daytime training pants are not made as overnight protection.
  • Skin and scent. Look for fragrance-free options if your child has sensitive skin.
  • Material claims. Several brands market plant-based or eco-minded lines, so read the label for what that means.

Can training pants be used overnight?

Daytime training pants are meant as a backstop between toilet trips. For nights, look for products with nighttime or overnight in the name, such as GoodNites, and check the weight range on the pack.
