How do I choose an ostomy pouch?

Start with the system your NSWOC nurse (a nurse specialized in wound, ostomy and continence care) fitted after surgery. Most people simply reorder it. Across every brand, three choices matter:

  • One-piece or two-piece. A one-piece pouch has the barrier attached. A two-piece system lets you change the pouch and leave the barrier on.
  • Pouch type. Drainable, closed-end or urostomy.
  • Barrier shape. Flat or convex, cut to your stoma size.

Our brand comparison explains the main product lines.

What helps a pouch stay on?

If edges lift or output leaks under the wafer, a small add-on may help. A barrier ring is a soft, mouldable seal that fills creases beside the stoma. Stoma paste fills a small gap and is not a glue. An ostomy belt clips onto belt tabs, so it must match your barrier's brand. Read barrier rings vs stoma paste and how ostomy belts fit. Use convex products only on your nurse's advice, and see your NSWOC nurse if leaks keep coming back.

How do I reorder the right product?

Check your current box before you order. Match the brand, product line, pouch type, stoma opening size or cut-to-fit range, and the box count. Two-piece systems also need the same flange size. Boxes come in different counts, such as 5, 10 or 30, so compare the count when you compare prices. Colour and window options, such as clear, opaque or opaque with an inspection window, are a personal choice. If you are unsure, call us at 365-797-2167.

Questions shoppers ask

Are Coloplast, Hollister and ConvaTec products interchangeable?

Not always. Two-piece flanges and belt tabs are made to match within a brand and line, so check compatibility before you mix. Reordering the exact product you already wear is the safest choice.

What does convex mean on an ostomy barrier?

A convex barrier has an outward curve that presses gently around the stoma. It suits some body shapes and stoma positions. Use convex products only if your NSWOC nurse recommends them.

What is the difference between a drainable and a closed pouch?

A drainable pouch has an outlet you open to empty it. A closed pouch is replaced when full. Urostomy pouches have a tap or outlet for urine. Your nurse can say which type suits your stoma.

Can I return opened ostomy supplies?

No. Opened healthcare and personal-care items cannot be returned, so check the size, brand and box count before you order. If a listing is unclear, call us at 365-797-2167.
