Wipes, washcloths or bathing gloves?

Pre-moistened wipes are the quickest option for changes and travel. Dry disposable washcloths let you add warm water or a no-rinse cleanser, and suit larger clean-ups. TENA ProSkin bathing gloves are pre-moistened no-rinse gloves for a full wash-up.

Sheet sizes differ, so check the dimensions in the title before you compare packs. Our comparison of adult wipes and washcloths lays out the trade-offs.

What does a no-rinse cleanser do?

A no-rinse cleanser is a spray, foam or liquid wash that you wipe away with a cloth instead of rinsing with water. That makes it practical in bed or in a chair. Check the label to confirm a product is no-rinse and whether it goes on a cloth or on the skin.

Read what a no-rinse perineal cleanser is before you choose between a spray, foam or wash cream.

Which cream or paste should I choose?

Moisturizing creams are made for dry skin. Barrier creams and pastes, such as zinc oxide pastes, form a protective layer on the skin as the label describes. Many are available scented or unscented.

Follow the label directions. If skin looks broken or sore, ask your nurse, doctor or pharmacist. See also our adult barrier creams and skin ointments and whether adults can use diaper rash cream.

Questions shoppers ask

Can I flush adult wipes?

No. Put wipes in the garbage, even if the pack says flushable, especially on a septic system. Check the pack and your municipality for disposal directions.

Can adults use baby wipes?

Baby wipes are smaller and thinner than adult wipes, so a clean-up can take more of them. Adult wipes are sized for adult care. Check the label on any product for intended use.

Should I choose unscented wipes?

Unscented wipes avoid added fragrance, which some people prefer for sensitive skin. If skin reacts to a product, stop using it and ask your nurse, doctor or pharmacist.

What is the difference between wipes and dry washcloths?

Wipes are already wet and ready to use. Dry washcloths are used with warm water or a no-rinse cleanser, so you choose what touches the skin. Both go in the garbage after use.
