How do I choose bottle nipples and flow rates?

Nipples are labelled by flow, such as slow, medium or fast, and often by age, such as 1+ months. Start with the flow the maker lists for your baby's age and size.

  • Match the nipple to the bottle line. Nipples from one brand do not always fit another brand's bottle.
  • Keep a few spare nipples, because they wear out.
  • If feeding seems hard, ask your doctor, nurse or public health nurse.

What do I need to clean and sterilise bottles?

Most families use a bottle brush, a nipple cleaner and a way to sterilise or dry the parts. This collection includes bottle brushes with stands, microwave steriliser bags and detergent tablets for bottle washers, plus replacement filters for some washer models.

Always follow the maker's care instructions, since some parts are not dishwasher or microwave safe. Check the washer model named on a listing before you order tablets or filters.

Which cups, bibs and pacifiers come next?

As babies grow, many move from bottles to straw cups and sippy cups. Replacement kits, such as Dr. Brown's straw cup kits, let you refresh a cup instead of buying a new one. Bibs and burp cloths help at mealtimes.

Pacifiers are listed here too. Our newborn pacifier guide explains what to check, and the pacifiers and soothers collection has more to compare.

Questions shoppers ask

How do I know which nipple flow to buy?

Start with the flow the maker lists for your baby's age, usually slow flow in the early months. If milk dribbles out or your baby seems to struggle, ask your doctor, nurse or public health nurse before changing flow.

Do nipples from one brand fit another brand's bottles?

Not always. Nipples are made for specific bottle lines, so check the bottle name or neck type on the listing before ordering. Wide-neck and standard-neck parts are usually not interchangeable.

How often should I replace bottle nipples?

Replace them when they look cracked, sticky, torn or swollen, or when the maker's guidance says so. Check them before each use and keep a few spares so you never run short.

Do you carry bottle washer detergent and filters?

Yes. The collection includes detergent tablets and replacement filters for some bottle washers. Check the washer model named on the listing before you order.
