Some waterproof mattress protectors do feel warm and rustle when you move, but how much depends on three things you can check before you buy: the waterproof layer, the top fabric and how closely the protector fits. Neither complaint is built into every waterproof protector. This guide shows where each complaint comes from and what to look for on a product page.
Where the crinkle and warmth come from
A waterproof protector has a barrier layer that stops liquid reaching the mattress. That layer is a film or coating, and it does not let air and moisture pass through the way plain cotton does. So it can hold some warmth against the sleeper, and a stiff film can make a rustling sound as it flexes under body weight.
The rest of the bed counts too: a thick duvet, flannel sheets in January or a warm room in July all add to what you feel. If you are waking up hot or sweaty and this is new for you, mention it to a doctor or pharmacist rather than assuming the bedding is the cause.
Vinyl and polyurethane waterproof layers compared
Two materials appear often on product pages. Treat the table as general guidance, because thickness and construction vary from one product to the next.
| Layer | General character |
|---|---|
| Vinyl | A plastic sheet or coating. It tends to be firmer and easy to wipe clean, and a firmer layer is more likely to rustle. |
| Polyurethane (PU) | A thin, flexible film or coating, often bonded to fabric. It tends to feel softer and move more quietly. |
Neither is automatically better. Vinyl suits someone who values a wipe-clean surface, while a polyurethane film may suit a light sleeper who hears every movement. If a page only says waterproof without naming the layer, ask us before you order. As an example of a vinyl option, the Mattress Protector Zipper Vinyl, 36 x 80 x 6.5 in names its material and a zipper in the title.
Surface fabrics: terry, knit and quilted tops
The top fabric changes the feel more than you might expect, because it sits between you and the barrier layer.
- Terry has a looped pile, like a towel. It feels soft and cushions the layer beneath, though its thickness can hold warmth.
- Knit is smooth and stretchy. It tends to be thinner and follows the mattress closely, which can help with slack and noise.
- Quilted tops have padding stitched in. The padding can muffle sound, but it adds thickness and some warmth with it.
Some waterproof covers have no fabric top at all. If a product page does not mention one, assume the sheet is the only layer between you and the barrier. A quilted mattress pad over the cover adds cushioning, along with a little warmth.
How sheets and bedding layers change the feel
A fitted sheet over the protector does two jobs: it keeps skin off the barrier layer and it can dampen rustling. A smooth, lightweight cotton sheet generally feels cooler than a heavy brushed one such as flannel, so changing the sheet with the season is a simple thing to try first.
Count your waterproof layers as well. A protector on the mattress with an underpad on top gives you two barriers, and their warmth can add up. If the bed feels too warm, one approach is to leave the protector on all the time and add the pad only on the nights it is needed.
Fit: why a loose protector is a louder protector
Slack fabric shifts, folds and rubs, and every fold is a place for sound. To check fit before you order:
- Measure the mattress length, width and depth in inches and centimetres, including any topper that stays on the bed.
- Compare the numbers with the product page, which should give the size and, for fitted styles, the depth it covers.
- Note the style. A zippered cover encloses the mattress, while a fitted style stretches over the corners like a fitted sheet.
- If the bed is adjustable and bends at the head or knees, look for a style with some give.
The Vinyl Mattress Protector, Zippered, Twin gives its size in the title, which is the first thing to match to your bed. Once any protector is on, smooth out the wrinkles and pull the corners snug before the sheet goes over it.
What to look for on the product page
Before you order, look for:
- The waterproof layer named (vinyl, polyurethane or another material), not just the word waterproof.
- The top fabric and its type, such as terry, knit or quilted.
- The fit style and the mattress depth it covers.
- Care instructions: whether it is machine washable, and the washing and drying temperature. Heat can damage some waterproof layers, so follow the label.

The same questions for washable underpads
A washable underpad is a smaller sheet with an absorbent top and a waterproof backing, so the same three questions apply: what is the backing, what is the top fabric and does it stay in place. Because a pad does not wrap the mattress, fit becomes a matter of size and position.
One option is the Hygge Supplies Washable Incontinence Bed Pad, Bamboo Top, Queen Bed, listed with a bamboo top for a queen bed. You can compare other sizes in the washable underpads and bed pads collection, and our guide to disposable vs washable bed pads covers how the two types differ.
Common questions
Will a waterproof protector make the bed warmer?
It can add some warmth, because the barrier layer lets less air through than plain fabric. Before you replace the protector, change one layer above it at a time, the sheet first and then the duvet, and give each change a few nights so you can tell which one made the difference.
Can I make a noisy protector quieter?
Often a little. Check that it fits without slack, smooth out the wrinkles and put a snug fitted sheet over it. If the layer itself is stiff, a different material may be the only real fix.
Is a zippered cover quieter than a fitted one?
Neither style is quiet or loud on its own. A cover that matches the mattress size leaves little slack, whichever style it is, so the layer material and the fit matter more than the style.
