Huggies Overnites: who they suit and how to choose a size

Huggies Overnites are the Huggies diapers made for night, for the long stretch between a bedtime change and the morning. The size you choose matters as much as the name, because a night diaper that gaps can leak however it is described. This guide covers what the line is for, how to choose a size for night and what to check before bed.

What Huggies says Overnites are for

Huggies presents Overnites as its night-time diaper. The name says as much, and the pack is where Huggies lists the features and any stated hours for the line. Read those as the maker's statements, and note them down if you are comparing with another night diaper.

You can see the line in the overnight diapers collection and in the wider Huggies diapers collection.

How they differ from daytime Huggies lines

Huggies' daytime lines are named for a stage, such as Little Snugglers for newborns and Little Movers for active babies, or for everyday use, as with Snug & Dry. Overnites is named for a time of day. A night diaper has a different job: it stays on for a longer stretch than a daytime one, while your baby is lying down. So the questions to ask are how long you expect between changes and how your baby sleeps, not only what size fits at noon.

Sizes the line comes in

When this guide was written, our store had Overnites pages in four sizes:

  • Size 3: 132 diapers
  • Size 4: 100 diapers
  • Size 6: 72 diapers
  • Size 7: 60 diapers

In these four pages the count drops as the size rises, so compare packs only within one size. One option is Huggies Overnites Diapers, Size 4, 100 Count. Listings change, so if the size you need is not shown here, check the collection for the current sizes or ask us.

Choosing a size for night

  1. Start with weight. Find your baby's current weight, then match it to the range printed on the pack or in the diaper sizing guide.
  2. If your baby is between sizes, think about fit before capacity. A diaper that is a size too big can gap at the legs, and a night diaper that gaps can leak whatever it states about absorbency.
  3. Some families try the next size up at night when the daytime size fits but leaks keep turning up in the morning. If you try it, check that the waist and legs still close snugly.
  4. Recheck the weight range whenever you get a new weight at a check-up.

Fit checks before bed

  • Put on a fresh diaper just before you settle your baby, so the night starts with an empty diaper.
  • Fasten the tabs evenly on both sides, snug but not tight, and follow the fit instructions on the pack.
  • Smooth the diaper flat. Bunched fabric at the front or back can leave gaps.
  • Check that sleepwear is not pulling the diaper down or pressing it tight.
  • Leave a spare diaper and wipes within reach, with a dim light, in case you need a night change.

In the morning, note where any damp patch is: legs, back or front. That tells you whether to adjust the fit or the size.

When to try something else

If leaks continue at the right size and a good fit, you have options. Another night-focused diaper may suit your baby's shape better, and we can tell you what is currently listed if you ask. If your child is potty training, night-time options in the training pants collection may be worth a look.

If night-time wetting is new or suddenly increases, or an older child is still wetting at night and you are worried, talk to a doctor or nurse.

Whatever you decide, keep notes for a week: the time of the bedtime change, the time of the morning check, where any damp patch was and which size you used. A short log makes a pattern much easier to see, and it gives us what we need if you contact us for help.

Common questions

Can I use Overnites during the day?

Nothing stops you, but daytime lines are named for stages and everyday use, and a baby who is crawling may be more comfortable in a line made for movement. Judge by fit.

Is size 7 only for older children?

Sizes are set by weight, not age. Size 7 was the largest Overnites page in our store when this guide was written, so go by the weight range on the pack.

How do I avoid running out?

Reorder while you still have several nights of diapers left. Products tagged Ships via Amazon are delivered by Amazon, usually in 2 to 4 business days. If your baby is near the top of a size range, confirm the next size first.

My baby's skin looks red in the morning. What should I do?

We cannot tell you what is causing it. Check the size and fit, and if the skin looks sore, broken or is not improving, ask a doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Follow the label on any diaper rash product.
