Baby diapers go by weight, not age. If your baby is between two sizes, the larger size gives more room and absorbency.

How do training pants sizes work?

Disposable training pants use toddler sizes such as 2T-3T, 3T-4T, 4T-5T and 5T-6T. Some night pairs use S/M with a weight range. These do not match diaper sizes, and they differ between brands.

Go by the weight range on the pack, not your child's age. Packs may list pounds, kilograms or both. Read training pants sizes explained, or try our free size finder.

Training pants, underwear or cloth trainers?

Disposable training pants contain mess and cut down laundry, which helps on outings. Straight to underwear gives a clear wet feeling but more clean-up. Cloth trainers sit in between, with padded layers you wash and reuse. Whichever you try, keep spares and a change of clothes nearby for leaks.

Many families use more than one. Compare them in training pants vs underwear and cloth vs disposable training pants.

What about nights and the switch from diapers?

There is no set age to switch. Cues include standing for changes, interest in the potty and dry stretches. See when to switch to training pants.

Night pairs are sold for a long sleep, so check the fit while your child lies down, looking for gaps at the waist and legs. Our guide to overnight vs daytime training pants explains the differences.

Questions shoppers ask

What age should my child start training pants?

There is no set age. Look for cues such as standing for changes, interest in the potty and dry stretches. If you have concerns about toileting, ask your doctor or public health nurse.

How are training pants different from diapers?

Training pants pull up and down like underwear, so your child can practise dressing. They absorb, so some children notice wetness less. Diapers are usually changed lying down.

Can my child wear training pants overnight?

Night pairs are made for a long sleep and are sized by weight range. Daytime pairs may not hold as much. Check the fit lying down, and look for gaps at the waist and legs.

Are cloth or disposable training pants better?

Neither is better in every house. Disposables are easier on outings and keep laundry down. Cloth is reusable and lets a child feel wetness sooner. Many families use both.
