Overnight training pants are made for a longer stretch between changes than daytime pairs, so most of what changes is how they are sold, sized and fitted. When a night pair leaks, a fit check is worth doing before you jump to a bigger size. This guide covers the differences, how to check fit lying down, and where to look when the waist or legs let go.
How overnight pants differ from daytime pants
Daytime pairs are built for a child who is upright and moving, with regular toilet trips and changes. Night pairs are sold for a long sleep in several positions, and many are marketed as holding more than daytime pairs. The name is a first clue: the Goodnites Girls' Nighttime Bedwetting Underwear, S/M (43-68 lbs), 44 Count listing says nighttime and bedwetting right in the title.
Makers describe how much a pair holds in different ways, so read the product page or the pack rather than assuming.
| Feature | Daytime pair | Night pair |
|---|---|---|
| Worn for | Waking hours, with toilet trips | A long sleep, often with no toilet trip |
| Child's position | Upright and moving | Back, side or tummy |
| Read on the page | Size range and count | Size range, weight range and what the maker says about absorbency |
Size ranges for nights
Sizes are not always listed the same way. Training pants in our store, such as the Pull-Ups and Pampers Easy Ups listings, use T sizes like 2T–3T and 5T–6T. The Goodnites listing above is sized S/M with a weight range of 43-68 lbs, which is roughly 20 to 31 kg.
For a bigger child, a weight range is a more direct guide than a clothing size. Use a recent weight for your child and compare it to the range on the listing. You can compare styles and size ranges in our training pants collection.
Fit when lying down
A pair that looks right standing up can gape once your child is lying down, so check it in a sleeping position.
- Waist: lie your child on their back and look for gaps along the waistband. It should sit snug against the tummy and back without digging in.
- Legs: the leg openings should follow the thigh with no gaps and no deep marks left on the skin.
- Height: pull the pants up fully so the waistband sits at the waist, not low on the hips.
- Pyjamas: choose roomy ones. Tight sleepwear can squeeze the pants and push liquid out at the edges.
If the skin looks red or sore in the morning, ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
Leaks at the waist or legs: what to check
Waist leaks
- Pull the pants up and smooth the waistband flat. Pyjama bottoms can roll it down overnight.
- Check the size. If the waistband gapes when your child lies down, the pair may be too big. If it digs in, it may be too small.
- Think about sleeping position. Liquid runs to the lowest point, so a tummy sleeper may leak at the front of the waistband and a back sleeper at the back.
Leg leaks
- Smooth the leg edges flat so they are not folded inwards.
- Look for gaps at the thigh while your child lies on their side.
A bigger size is not a shortcut. A pair that is too big gapes at the waist and legs, which can mean more leaks, not fewer. Stay inside the weight range on the listing and change one thing at a time so you know what worked.
If night wetting is new, starts suddenly after a dry spell, or comes with other changes you are worried about, ask your doctor or nurse.
Using daytime pants at night
You can try a daytime pair at night, and some families do, especially when a child is small or leaks are rare. A daytime pair is made for a shorter stretch than a night pair, so expect it to be tested sooner. Try it first on a night when a bed pad is down and the morning is unhurried. If it holds through the night, there is no need to switch. If it leaks even though the fit is right, that points to a night pair rather than a bigger daytime size.
Pairing night pants with a bed pad
Even a good fit leaks sometimes. A washable pad under your child's hips, over a fitted sheet, turns a leak into a quick swap instead of a full strip of the bed. Pads come in different sizes: Utopia Bedding Washable Incontinence Bed Pads, 34 x 36 in, Blue, 4 Pack is one option, and a four-pack lets you rotate while others are in the wash. For more sizes, browse washable underpads and bed pads.
Cloth options for nights
Cloth is possible at night, but it takes more planning. Cloth training pants are reusable pants with absorbent layers built in, and some families put a waterproof cover over regular underwear instead. One option for the cover route is Joyo Roy Waterproof Covers for Potty Training Underwear, Boys, 3T, 4 Pack.
- Check the listing for what the item is made to hold, and test it on a night with a bed pad underneath before you rely on it.
- Own enough pairs that a wet night does not leave you without one the next evening.
- Wash and dry by the care label. Waterproof layers often have limits on heat and fabric softener.

Common questions
Should I size up for night pants?
Not as a first move. Check the weight range on the listing, then check the fit lying down. If your child is at the top of the range, the next size may be right. If not, a bigger pair can gape and leak more.
Do night pants stop night-time wetting?
No. Night pants are made to contain leaks. They are not a treatment. If your child is older and nights are still wet, or the wetting is new or sudden, talk to your doctor or nurse.
What if leaks continue even though the fit looks right?
Try a different style within the same weight range and check that the bed pad is large enough. If you are stuck, we can help narrow the options.
