Diaper size numbers are not a shared standard. Each maker chooses its own weight ranges, cut and stretch, so a Size 3 in one brand can fit differently from a Size 3 in another, and lines from the same maker can differ too. The reliable way to switch is to compare the weight range on each product page, not the number.
There is no shared size standard
A diaper size number is a label chosen by the maker. Each maker decides what weight its Size 3 covers, how it is cut and how far it stretches, so the number is not a measurement you can carry from one brand to another. Even the labels vary: some products use words such as Newborn, some use numbers, some use Small, Medium and Large.
Browse the store and you will see sizes written as 2T-3T on training pants, as S/M with a weight range in the title of one nighttime underwear product, and as Small or Large on swim diapers. Each system belongs to its maker, and each only makes sense inside that product.
Weight ranges differ on the package
The weight range printed on the pack is the number to rely on. It may be given in pounds, kilograms or both, and ranges often overlap with the next size. A Size 3 from one maker can start at a different weight than another maker's Size 3, so it can line up better with another brand's Size 2 or Size 4.
Some listings show a weight range in the product title and many show only a size, so open the product page and look at the details, or read the size chart on the pack, before you decide.
Cut, rise and stretch differ too
Weight ranges are only part of the fit. Makers also choose:
- Rise: the distance from the front waist to the back waist through the crotch, which affects how high the diaper sits
- Waistband stretch, and how far the tabs can reach
- The shape of the leg openings and how snug the elastic is
- The shape and thickness of the padding between the legs
Two diapers with the same weight range can sit differently on the same baby. A baby with sturdy thighs may do better in one cut and a slimmer baby in another, so the real test is trying a diaper on your own baby.
Why lines within one brand can fit differently
A brand is not one product. Huggies Snug & Dry, Huggies Little Movers and Huggies Overnites are separate lines, and so are Pampers Swaddlers, Pampers Cruisers 360 and Pampers Baby Dry. Lines can be designed for different stages or uses, and their cut, padding and size run can differ with them.
Two titles in the store show the point. Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers, Size 4, 150 Count and Huggies Little Movers Diapers, Size 4, 120 Count both say Size 4 and come from one maker, but they are different lines. Read each product page rather than assuming they match.
How to translate your current size to a new brand
- Find the weight range on the pack you use now, and note your baby's current weight.
- Note how the current size fits: snug without marks, too tight, or loose at the legs or waist.
- Open the new product page and find the size whose weight range covers your baby's weight.
- If your baby falls near the edge between two sizes, decide using how the current size fits rather than the number alone.
- Buy a single pack first, and check the fit at the legs and waist after a short wear.
- Keep the old pack until you are sure the new one works.
The diaper sizing guide gives a starting point for babies and adults, and the size finder on the homepage can narrow things down. If the skin under the waistband or leg elastic looks sore or broken in any size, check with a doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
Check the product page, not the size number
| What you see | What it tells you | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Size number | A label chosen by the maker | Do not compare it across brands or lines |
| Weight range | The range the maker lists for that size | Compare this between products |
| Fit on your baby | Gaps, marks and leaks | Trust this over the other two |
If you are weighing up a switch between two brands, the Comfees diapers review compares sizes and fit alongside Huggies as one example. You can also browse the baby diapers and training pants collection and open each product page to compare weight ranges.

Common questions
If my baby is a Size 3 in one brand, is that a Size 3 in another?
Not necessarily. Match by the weight range on each product page and by how the diaper fits, not by the number.
Does every line start with a Newborn size?
Not every line does. Some lines start at Newborn, some at Size 1 or higher, so check where a line begins before you plan a switch.
Can I mix brands in the same week?
Yes, as long as each diaper fits properly. Many families keep one line for daytime and another for nights or outings. Keep each size in its own bin so they do not get mixed up.
